May 4 Shop Hop

We are aware that this happened before market, but we didn’t get the post up until TODAY! It was 6:00 am on a Friday May 4th, we’re standing in Trina’s kitchen filling our travel mugs with iced coffee getting ready to jump in the Beetle and head East. Anyone who knows us, knows it isn’t every day you’ll find us vertical at that time in the morning.

Our plan was to hit as many Iowa Quilt shops (East of Des Moines) as we could, to show off our One Big Cabin quilt and hopefully sell them a pattern or two. We had butterflies in our tummies at the thought of someone rejecting our “baby”; but how else do you sell and distribute your patterns when you are a brand-new company and no one really knows about you. It was an eventful morning; Trina whip-stitching binding on the fresh sample she took off the long arm four hours earlier (seriously!), while Doris navigated through a torrential downpour, at one point losing sight of the 18 wheeler in front of us. Thankfully, the skies cleared and we reached our first destination, Heartland Cottons in DeWitt, Iowa. Owner Sherry was just the friendly face we needed to see to wash away the nerves and give us the confidence we needed to make that first sale!

DeWitt is at the far Eastern edge of Iowa, along the the Mississippi River … so we started there and made our way back West, visiting 8 shops and making 7 sales!!! On the journey we stopped in Kalona to check out the Visitors Center. Great sidewalk quilt blocks all over town and great quilt blocks on the visitors center.

It was the day before Cinco de Mayo, so we celebrated our successful day with dinner at a Mexican restaurant (our fave!) before heading home for the night.

It’s Giveaway Time!

We’d love to give one of our visitors a copy of our new pattern, “One Big Cabin” because we are just so excited to have it finally printed — you know the drill, read the giveaway deets below and comment on this post before 5 pm on May 25th (Friday)…

One Big Cabin

This pattern was a long time coming.  As quilt shop employees, we travelled to Spring 2010 Quilt Market together, and we were so inspired, we spent the four hour drive home brainstorming ideas for a new business venture together.

It took us a year to actually form Row House Creations, and another nearly 8 months to actually get that first pattern printed, but it was worth the wait.  We designed this quilt together, brainstorming the layout over iced coffees at Caribou Coffee, Doris went home and drew the critters, and eventually transformed the sketches into this applique pattern drawing:

We are adding quilting diagrams (more than one idea per quilt) to our patterns for an added BONUS!  For an entry into our giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling us what you look for in a quilting pattern, or what other designs/motifs/blocks you would like to see in a pattern from Row House  Creations!  For an extra entry. become a follower of our blog!

Spring Quilt Market

So, it’s over.  Well, for us, it is.  We’re driving north on I-35, drinking Coke Zero and Diet Coke (respectively), our minds are reeling with ideas and new info, and making our to-do list (it’s a page and a half single spaced already!!!)  Yikes!

We learned our share about pattern distribution (left two dozen with our first distributor!), what it takes to have your own booth at Market, and just about anything else we needed to know.  Lots of good information collected and crammed in in a very short span of time.

We had our share of fun… and made our own fun as the day went along.

And even got chummy with Tula Pink at the end of the day!

Just to name a few.  We added to our series of silly partner photos as we went along (see Linus pic above) which we’ve uploaded to flickr for your enjoyment..

We sewed blocks for an upcoming pattern this morning in the hotel room.  Sewing on a lazy Saturday morning after a long day on our feet at Market was just what the doctor ordered.  Very calming and therapeutic…  Check out time was at noon, so we loaded up the luggage cart and headed out to the Escape.  The challenge became fitting all of this…

…along with Trina’s 60 yards of batting from Thursday’s Machine Quilter’s Showcase!

It all fit!  After a relaxing lunch, we headed back downtown to the Convention Center to visit a few booths and visit with a few folks we spoke with yesterday and deliver some patterns.  Tomorrow: we rest.  Monday: we start tackling that long to-do list (see first paragraph)!
